blog.TrevorBramble.com: Why I Left Habari

Trevor - thanks for posting your candid views of why you left Habari. Very interesting.

I think the comparisons with Wordpress are slightly unfair. Automattic is a company with paid, full-time employees whereas Habari is a community of volunteers although I take your point about the dearth of people developing plugins and themes.

I think the issue of locating plugins and then struggling to locate the right version of the plugin for your version of Habari is a serious one and one which is alientating potential Habari users.

Thanks for the pointer to Scanty - looks interesting.

    Hi, Andy. Thanks for reading!

The subtext of my criticism of Habari is that it could really succeed and is currently falling short of its potential. If my exit interview has any effect at all (I did not expect it to receive any attention) I hope it helps highlight some of the issues facing potential users and contributors.

I think Scanty users are typically going to be fringe technical guys like myself and it isn't meant to solve the same problems that Habari and WordPress are meant to solve. In other words, as I suggested in my original post, don't look at Scanty as a replacement for Habari, rather I've decided to do something different here and Scanty meets that need.

    Cheers,
    Trevor

You're completely right, and I appreciate you taking the time to say why you've decided Habari isn't right for you at the moment.

We are aware that the documentation is lacking at the moment, and there is work active to get the wiki more organised (see the wiki working group). We're also working on better management of themes and plugins (see the addons directory working group.

As with all open source projects (that don't have paid, full-time employees, thanks Andy :) the way that these things happen is that people step up and do them. Communities around projects take time to develop, and there's ebb and flow as people get busy in life and $work. Any time you'd like to come back and be part of that community, we'd love to have you!
